Obtain Credit Report
Use this letter format to write to credit report companies to obtain a copy of your credit report. Most companies need to know the following: 1) Current address as well as your address(es) for the previous two years; 2) Social security number; 3) Former/changed name, for example your maiden name; 4) Date of birth; 5) Telephone number; 6) Current employer; 7) A check or money order to pay for the service. (Sometimes the service is free. Check with the individual companies to make sure you send the right amount.)
If you do not want to write a letter, the companies also have toll-free numbers that you may call to obtain a copy of your credit report. (Equifax: [800] 997-2493; Experian: [888] 397-3742; Transunion [800] 916-8800.)
